Meisje met het gouden oorijzer

Description

A historically inspired painting in a historic street! This mural is made by Sjoerd Jansen (aka Studio Anti-Held) in the Bagijnestraar for the 'Oude Markten Street Art Takeover' organized by Writer's Block Murals.

Sjoerd: "A young woman is getting ready for a day at the market, tying her hair back so she can put on her lace cap and ear iron. In the nineteenth century, the ear iron became a status symbol in Friesland. It was a way to display prosperity and was also used as a dowry. On the table in front of her are various Vanitas objects with symbolic meanings about the region through the centuries."

You'll see, among other things, a helmet ("symbolizing the death of Wijerd Jelckama), a Redstart bird ("for King Radboud"), and a mirror ("a 19th-century English design that refers to the fact that the inspirations, Alma Tadema, Cristoffel, and Kate Bisschop, all had important ties to England").
