Māori for ‘the guardian’, Kaitiaki is a symbol of protection to the city. The bird on the right is a Kotare (kingfisher). The Ruru (Owl) on the left is sacred to Māori culture and synonymous with signs of warning. This piece references the 2011 earthquake of which the city is still recovering but also looks forward to the future.
