Arkona Silo

A tribute to local Roley Klinge, the "unofficial mayor" of Arkona. Tennis was Roley Klinge's main passion and he was a key member of the Arkona Tennis Club for his entire life of 70 years. He fostered junior players in the district by running tournaments at Arkona for over 30 years, dedicating summer weekends to his beloved community sport Roley's commitment to his community and sport was year-round. When the summer tennis season ended, he volunteered as a football goal umpire throughout the winter, umpiring over 300 games for the Antwerp and then Dimboola Football Clubs. Off the playing field, Roley was at the heart of Arkona community activities. During the winter months he ran card tournaments at the old Arkona school. Back in the days when community dances were regular social events, Roley was the Master of Ceremonies at many local dances. These dances brought the young people from the neighbouring farms and towns together, and it was a natural progression that Roley was the Master of Ceremonies at many local weddings too.

Roley Klinge, the choice for the silo art of the Arkona community for the silo art, passed away in 1991. Although Smug had photos of Roley, he decided not to paint his body at all. "His memory and legacy remains, still inspiring future generations," said Smug. "Not physically painting the body would also make this an ageless, raceless and genderless mural that can appeal to all walks of life, to interact with the playful tone of the artwork." Smug included Roley's infamous terry-towelling hat and glasses, and the name 'Roley' appears on the gold Rolex watch.
