This mural is inspired by and dedicated to all Boricuas and Latinos outside of their homeland. They leave their families, friends, and a part of their history behind to seek a better future. Carrying in their baggage their entire culture, pride, and traditions to create a new home and a community proud of their roots.
According to the 2010 census, Holyoke, Massachusetts had the largest Puerto Rican population per capita of any city in the United States outside of Puerto Rico. Through a combination of agricultural programs instituted by the United States Department of Labor, Puerto Ricans began to establish themselves in the city in the mid-1950s, and many arrived during the Puerto Rican immigration wave to the northeastern United States in the 1980s.
