Port Kembla is a suburb of Wollongong, is 10 km south of the CBD, and forms part of the Illawarra region of New South Wales. The suburb comprises a seaport, an industrial complex (one of the largest in Australia), a small harbour foreshore nature reserve, a fabulous beach, and a small commercial sector. It is situated on the tip of Red Point. The name "Kembla" is an Aboriginal word meaning "plenty [of] wild fowl".
Wander through the small village and see 30+ fabulous murals painted by local, national and international artists since the inception of the Wonderwalls Festival in nearby Wollongong in 2012.
The Illawarra now houses one of the most concentrated public art collections in the southern hemisphere with over 150 murals installed by the Wonderwalls® team alone and Port Kembla's selection are mainly held within a three block walk in either direction.
Wonderwalls® hosted its first festival in Port Kembla in 2019, working with the long term 'Port Kembla 2505, Revitalisation Plan', which aims to transform and reinvent the location into a thriving cultural hub.
Definitely worth the walk.
