Going into 2022, Lukas Kasper began a six-month full-time mural artist contract with Wodonga City Council. During this time, he was responsible for developing each project from the ground up, managing all aspects including paperwork, permits, designs, confirmations, paint sourcing, and the painting process itself. This role required not only the creation of murals but also the facilitation of large-scale public art projects. One of the standout works completed during this period was Sun Daze, which became one of ten murals in town.
The inspiration for the flower in Sun Daze stemmed from the color of the wall itself. Years before the mural was conceived, the building had been painted a bold yellow, which initially shocked the community and was considered an eyesore. Over time, however, the color became embraced, and Lukas sought to continue this narrative by incorporating a vibrant sunflower into the design. Positioned near a roundabout, the mural was also designed with a directional element in mind—guiding viewers and customers toward the front entrance by incorporating his signature street-art-inspired pattern work toward the front of the building and within the flower itself.
The clients were initially hesitant about the concept, having faced scrutiny over the wall’s color in the past. However, with reassurance, they approved the design, and the mural has since become one of the most popular in town. Sun Daze has been featured in numerous news segments and publications, and Lukas continues to hear firsthand about its impact whenever he returns to Wodonga for new projects.
