Description

At the initiative of the municipality and the housing corporation Mitras, Carin Sleurink created this mural together with local residents to improve the neighborhood’s grey appearance.

The magpie symbolizes freedom and openness, it can fly wherever it wants and drop in anywhere. The inverted horseshoe represents the good fortune it brings into the neighborhood.

The title is sometimes listed as Free Bird, but also Magpie.

My passion for murals began in 2019. I read a newspaper article about Jan is de Man, who had created a mural in Utrecht. It depicted a bookcase (on Mimosastraat). Local residents had been asked what their favorite book was and whether he could include it on the bookshelf. After my retirement, I started organizing cycling tours past twenty beautiful, large murals in Utrecht, and more recently also in Nieuwegein. It’s great fun to do!
