Stuivesantplein

These jungle-like murals all bear the name of the square they are situated: Stuivesantplein. They are intended to give a fresher and safer image to the dodgy underpass near the square in the Broekhoven district.

When painting these murals, the artist was spontaneously offered help by 82 years young local resident Cor Groeneveld who, in his working life, painted texts on billboards.

Both men created quite a buzz on the square. Many people came by to take a look at the progress of the painting work. The project created connection and had a fraternizing effect and Cor certainly had an important role in this. During the whole project, this not only made Paul feel he was an artist, but he also felt he was a bit of a social worker.

Besides the jungle scenes on the walls, you can also find an ocean mural with colorful tropical fish and a sea turtle.

Paul Watty about his walls at Stuivesantplein: "Working on a mural is a very special process. Not only does the wall come to life, but the entire neighborhood does too. During the weeks that I paint, it becomes a gathering place for people. They pause whatever they're doing. They literally stand still to see how their home gets the appearance it deserves. The metamorphosis of the square has an enormously positive effect on the whole district. Daily, I receive compliments and people thank me for the sense of safety and pride this mural gives them."
