Casa Cornelio

Decorative graffiti on the garage in memory and homage to Casa Cornelio, the mythical anarchist tavern destroyed by cannon fire during the Republic.

One of the most popular venues in Seville was destroyed in the summer of 1931 by order of the Government as a coup to eliminate a meeting place for left-wing groups and prominent figures of the time.

It was wiped off the map. No more. One of the best-known anarchist taverns in the city of Seville during the Second Republic, was destroyed with grenades in the well-known 'Bloody Week' in the summer of 1931. The monarchist right wanted to dismantle the image of the new Government. They would create a hoax. The press spoke of violent altercations and street violence. About twenty deaths in seven days. And the republican government in Madrid would act accordingly. To put down the anarchist and communist revolts, Casa Cornelio was shelled before the fervent meetings of militants. Ninety years after the events, the Cornelio family was never compensated despite the farce. His great-grandson, Antonio Ochoa, speaks to Público to tell how the Government never gave an explanation for what happened. "They went to Madrid to claim and came back with what they were wearing," says Ochoa.
