La mia isola (My island)

A mother portrayed holding her little one in her arms looking towards a distant horizon. She wants to convey a message of solidarity and hope towards these families who, although affected by a painful situation, must look to the future with confidence, in the knowledge that their children are entrusted to healthcare facilities of primary importance and of universally recognized excellence. This is the message that the Rotary Club Pisa and Rotary Club Galilei, supported by District 2071 of the Rotary Club International, intend to underline in the mural they had created by the artist Alice Pasquini, one of the few internationally established female exponents among the protagonists of the street art movement. A work, today visible on the external facade of the headquarters of the Isola dei Girasoli Foundation, in via Giovannini in the municipality of San Giuliano Terme, which not even the Coronavirus has managed to stop. Alice Pasquini, in fact, created her work in the days before the lockdown last March. When Pisa and the whole of Italy stopped due to the outbreak of the pandemic. But the strokes and colors (made available free of charge by the Caparol company, a leader in the production of paints), expertly mixed by Alice Pasquini, depicted hope and solidarity beyond the virus. “My Island”, this is the title of the work, was inaugurated in recent days, in the presence of the artist herself, of the president of the Isola dei Girasoli Foundation, Maurizio Sbrana, of the president of AGBALT (Association of Parents of Children Affected by Leukemia or Cancer ), Tiziana Del Carlo, the mayor of San Giuliano Terme, Sergio Di Maio, as well as the president of the two promoting Rotary Clubs, Gino Dini (Pisa) and Andrea Maestrelli (Galilei). “Today a dream comes true for us – underlined Dini and Maestrelli -. We remember, in fact, when in January 2019, so about a year and a half ago, we contacted Alice Pasquini for the first time, proposing her project. Her response was immediate and enthusiastic at the idea of creating a work in an area that hosts another famous mural, such as Keith Haring's "Tuttomondo". Today, therefore, we are particularly proud and happy that this mural, measuring almost 90 square meters, was created, so beautiful to look at and so rich in meaning."
