A Time Machine Called Tinaja — 179’ x 74’ x 19’ – Steel, Polyurethane, LEDs, Concrete, Native Plantings
Commissioned by City of Phoenix Office of Arts & Culture and Water Services Department
Shop: Commemorative T-Shirt & Sticker
Description from the artist: "Working with the City of Phoenix’s Water Department, Office of Arts & Culture, and Dig Studio, we designed a set of sculptural arches and a winding, landscaped-path using local students’ expressed needs and desires for their walk to school as the foundation for the concepts. The central sculptures mimic the look and feel of water, creating a luminescent blue passageway between schools; a regular route for highschooleers headed to meet their younger siblings at the neighboring middle school—a trip back in time. The fencing was designed to nod to the art deco aesthetics popular during the neighborhood’s original construction. The plantings are native botanicals selected for their resiliency, segmented and rowed to pay homage to the area’s agricultural history. The title, “A Time Machine Called Tinaja”, refers to the transition of land use, water sources, and the community’s interaction with the land."
