Tijdens het Belgische voorzitterschap van de Raad van de Europese Unie werd Gijs Van Hee gevraagd om een muurschildering te maken die een democratisch Europa uitbeeldt voor het #EuropeStreetArt-project. Je kunt alle werken van het #EuropeStreetArt-project hier bekijken.

Vanhee ziet Europeanen als een diverse groep mensen met verschillende culturen en tradities, maar verenigd in hun geloof in democratie, wat hen collectief verheft. Dit democratische geloof werkt als een brandende vlam die een kwetsbare heteluchtballon ervan weerhoudt om te vallen. Als continent navigeren ze door de onbekende ruimte, geleid door de godin Athena, die wijsheid vertegenwoordigt en de basis vormt van deze democratische structuur. Athena geeft richting aan dit oude continent, rijk aan geschiedenis en cultuur. Ze beschermt hun vrijheid om zich zonder angst voor intimidatie te uiten, zelfs wanneer dergelijke uitingen soms een directe bedreiging voor de democratie kunnen vormen, zowel van binnenuit als van buitenaf.

This democratic belief works as a burning flame that keeps a vulnerable hot air balloon from falling. As a continent, they navigate through the unknown space, guided by the goddess Athena, who represents wisdom and forms the foundation of this democratic structure. Athena provides direction to this old continent, rich in history and culture. Guarding their freedom to express themselves without fear of harassment, even when such expressions might sometimes pose a direct threat to democracy, whether from within or outside.
