St Thenue

The mural Illustrates St. Thenue, a princess of a pagan king. As a young, pregnant and unmarried woman, her father ordered her to be hurled from a hill near Edinburgh.  When she survived the fall she was put in a small boat and cast adrift in the Firth of Forth to perish.  She survived and was guided across the Firth of Forth by a Shoal of trout, which are shown on her shawl, the shawl also features 29 floral motifs. These motifs are a tribute to the 29 Women who died in the 1889 Templeton factory disaster in which a wall collapsed onto a weaving shed. The workforce was composed almost entirely of East End Glasgow women and many were buried in the ruins. Thenue, now known more commonly as St.Enoch was the mother of St.Mungo, Glasgow’s patron saint.
