The “Stützwerk Farbe” project is an urban art initiative in Essen in which graffiti artists have transformed the gray concrete pillars of the Helbing Bridge (on the A40 highway near central station) into murals several meters high. The colorful pillars serve to brighten up the dreary cityscape. The initiative was launched by the Essen-based artist collective Signs and Wonders and supported by the City of Essen’s Cultural Office. The pillars are freely accessible and can be viewed at any time.
