The rooster from the chosen work by Melchior d'Hondecoeter can be seen from afar. Your curiosity is immediately aroused, because what else is there to see behind the houses? What can it mean?

Collin van der Sluijs and Super A chose the painting Chickens and ducks from the Mauritshuis museum as the starting point for the mural. They were given complete artistic freedom to translate their inspiration into a mural. The work may surprise, move, raise questions, but also generate discussions.

We see a porcelain rooster and pheasant. The porcelain lies in shards on the floor. A real rooster has broken loose from the porcelain and is dashing away. The pheasant also makes its way out of the porcelain. This is a symbol of regaining freedom. Breaking out, breaking rules, being able to be who you are and do whatever you want. The porcelain (also a product from the seventeenth century) symbolizes the controlled and directed society of the time, the strict rules of life and expectations. The artists build a field of tension between two worlds: then and now, fake and real, being locked up and freedom.
