Rotary Mural

This mural is a Rotary Club of Coonabarabran project to engage with young people in the community. With funding from the Rotary Foundation, the mural was designed collaboratively by a group of local youth under the guidance of Indigenous artist Paris Norton. It highlights the positive impact of Rotary in the local and worldwide community, the beauty of the landscape and the importance of Indigenous history.

The Warrumbungle Mountains are depicted in the background, while the 'tree of words' represents community. The words were selected by the participants and convey what is important to them for the future. The eagle represents Biame, the skygod/creator for the local Indigenous tribe, the Gamilaroi. Biame came from the sky to create everything, and gave the people their laws, songs and culture. Within the eagle are symbols that represent local Aboriginal stories. The Rotary symbol which forms the eye of the eagle depicts the vision of Rotary for the future.
