Kaitiaki

This piece was painted for the Street Prints Otautahi festival in December 2017.

Kaitiaki’ is Maori for ‘the guardian’ and is a symbol of protection to the city. The bird on the right is a Kotare (kingfisher). The Ruru (Owl) on the left is sacred to Maori culture and synonymous with signs of warning. This piece references the earthquake of 2011 of which the city is still recovering but also looks forward to the future.
