Alexandre Farto aka Vhils

Scratching the Surface

Description

This piece is the work of internationally renowned Portuguese artist VHILS. For several years, he has been developing a unique artistic practice. Using various tools (jackhammer, chisel, stonecutter's hammer, explosive, acid, etc.), VHILS etches walls to reveal gigantic portraits.

Here, the work incorporates subtle nods to Portugal's Carnation Revolution, a movement that peacefully defended freedom and democracy on April 25. 1974

We can see a carnation flower inscribed in the composition. Through this mural, VHILS suggests that we reflect on the values that guided this peaceful revolution: dialogue and collaboration to build a more inclusive society.

This project was produced in partnership with the Portuguese Embassy in Brussels, Turismo de Portugal and All About Things.

Inaugurated on June 26, 2024 by Delphine Houba, Alderman for Culture of the City of Brussels, Jorge Cabral, Ambassador of Portugal to the Kingdom of Belgium and Carlos Abade, President of Turismo de Portugal.
