Hobo Collective

<div>With the creation of structures which accompany – and at the same time go beyond – the existing uses of the place located at the Époisses tram stop in Planoise neighborhood, the collective of HOBO architects has proposed installations which invite you to meetings and imagination. This temporary development follows the desire of the “Ateliers Juste Ici” to make this nameless space a public place animated by regular meetings.</div>

<div>While he was working on the Mirages installation, 3ttman had some free time to make cement candy! On the abandoned military barracks on Rue Voirin, the artist hijacked Marshal Pétain’s slogan that said Work, Family, Homeland and transformed it into Work, Family, Party. Pétain was the marshal in charge of France under Nazi occupation, everything about him has strong anti-democratic connotations. 3ttman’s intervention aimed precisely at turning a dramatic act into a careless joke and at affirming the need for lightness in a world where things are sometimes taken too seriously. Some neighbors were really annoyed by this sentence, assuming that humour is in danger in our modern societies !&nbsp;<br>Project created within the scope of the “5th Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

<div>A multidisciplinary collective that combines applied and visual arts, "Le Cabanon Vertical" questions the place of the individual in urban space, its uses and its freedom to act. Self-construction is a starting point for a poetic and active approach to space.&nbsp;<br>For this 2nd year of BAM!, the graphic designers’ workshop Terrains Vagues has handed over to the architects’ collective Cabanon Vertical.</div>

<div>Far from the idea of decorating the city, Escif sees his murals as pretexts for exchange. The context is for him one of the essential ingredients, the imagery that emerges above all at the service of the dialogue that he wishes to engage with the passers-by. The artist did a residency at the CFA Hilaire de Chardonnet in Besançon with the students. The high school students painted the result of their exchanges with Escif in situ, on the walls of their school.</div>

<div>A contemporary artist on the fringe of established categories, Fermin Jimenez Landa is not a conventional person. In 2016, he proposed a denunciatory work at the Bien Urbain Festival following the Eurovision contest. This one exposed some time earlier the list of banned flags, due to a controversial aspect of the appearance of a Basque flag next to an ISIS flag. With this work, Fermin Jimenez Landa defends the colors of his native land.&nbsp;<br>Project created within the scope of the “6th Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

Daniel Muñoz san

<div>Emeritus draughtsman invited to the 1st edition of Bien Urbain, San returns to grace Besançon with his line of unparalleled precision. Always in search of a perfect symbiosis between the work and its support, he does not hesitate to stage his satires on unexpected surfaces.<br>Daniel Muñoz San has painted a diptych on the outside wall of the backstage area of the Little Theatre. It shows a masked character enclosed in a geometric architecture, representing the stage, the interior. What tells a spectator to a witness

<div>The artist 3ttman has placed custom-made ceramics in the asperities of the pavement of the Battant district. His mission is to repair the city by giving it a luxurious and colorful second skin.&nbsp;<br>Project created within the scope of the “5th Bien Urbain edition”, June 2015.</div>

Stéréo Felix

<div>The artist Stéréo Félix created a mural with the employees of the Brasserie de l’Espace, for its 10th anniversary. After an introductory workshop on his approach to watercolour technique, the employees of the brewery were able to test themselves with the artist by creating a mural right next to their workplace. A beautiful meeting that brought as much to the participants as to Stéréo Félix.</div>

Fernando Abellanas alias Lebrel

<div>A regular at the Bien Urbain Festival, the artist Fernando Abellanas returned to Besançon to propose several small “refuges”, in the corners of the city bridges… Each one was designed to suit the needs, adapting to the rough edges and taking inspiration from the architectural specificities of the bisontins bridges. Here a small staircase leading to the interior of the arch of the République bridge, side Parc Micaud.<br>Project created within the scope of the “9th Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

<div>Bastardilla is a prominent artist from Bogotá, the capital of Colombia. Most of her work deals with themes related to the difficult situations of Latin American women and the state of violence in which some parts of her native country find themselves.</div>

<div>In addition with Dispatchwork which will be remembered by Besançon people of all ages, Jan Vormann also realised for the Bien Urbain edition, iridescent mosaics incrustations in Besançon bitumen. An ironical blink of an eye to sadly gorgeous multicolor oil stains left by cars on the ground and visible by rain time.<br>Project created within the scope of the “9th Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

Monumental Street Art 

<div>Far from the idea of decorating the city, Escif sees his murals as pretexts for exchanges. The context is for him one of the essential ingredients, the imagery that emerges above all, at the service of the dialogue that he wishes to engage with the passers-by. For the first festival edition, Escif realized this painting titled "La propriété", just a step away from the birth house of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, "father of anarchy" born in Besançon. <div>Since the 1980s, OX has been drawing inspiration and successfully diverting codes and media from advertising imagery with contextual work that sharpens our eyes and never ceases to surprise. His work in abstract forms embraces the surrounding environment so much that it sometimes evokes narrations, comic situations or highlights small or large urban aberrations.<br>Project created within the scope of the “7th Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

<div>We were approached by the City of Besançon to produce a mural and an introductory screen printing workshop on the occasion of the opening of the “The Museum in Planoise”. Followers of abstract and figurative geometric shapes, Nelio and Small Studio artists took up the challenge to make a mural on two floors, featuring different colored faces and profiles.&nbsp;</div>

<div>French artist, Eltono has been working in the public space for over fifteen years, notably through mural painting. He now plays with lines to repeat this adaptable form and make it a graphic motif constant enough to be identified but at the same time changeable enough to fit a given context. It is the way he articulates the lines and the colors he uses that allows him to adapt to the surfaces he paints on.<br>During two weeks, the schoolchildren of La Grette and La Butte neighborhood, and a few lucky people had the opportunity to make a mural painting. A geometrical and random composition gradually took shape on the wall, which revealed new patterns everyday through the play of colours and assemblages.&nbsp;</div>

<div>On the occasion of the European artistic exchange project “Recover the streets”, 6 artists were invited to work with neighbors to "reclaim the street", create murals but also create a shared square and garden in a previously inaccessible space.&nbsp;<br>One of them, Arantxa Recio Parra aka Harsa is a Spanish artist, illustrator, muralist and graphic designer. As evidenced by her colorful and narrative illustrations often featuring characters, Harsa enjoys working in rich and diverse projects, ranging from paper publishing to textile design.</div>

<div>Always obsessed by the work of the letter and the forms, Remed's paintings also tend towards a language always more universal and synthetic; that of the geometry, the body and the colors. He finds in otherness the raw material to create and purify to the maximum his compositions which are felt more than understood.<br>Project created within the scope of the "5th Bien Urbain edition".</div>

Luce

<div>Adopting a combinatorial typography, far from the usual vocabulary of tag, Luce creates strange situations (sculptures, montages, paintings...). Realized in situ in wood or other recycled material, his intriguing installations seem official but without function, playful but without rules of the game. The daring young artist has scattered numerous wood’s installations in the interstices of Besançon city.<br>Project created within the scope of the “5th Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

Brad Downey

<div>Brad Downey's work is inseparable from public space. For the past fifteen years, this American artist, who lives in Berlin, has been making interventions that hijack urban objects and furniture in a playful, disillusioned or grating way. His work is mainly based on the role of the individual in the city and his physical or dreamlike construction. He plays with street objects in an unconventional way to reorganize them and give them a new (non)meaning. His creations live at the rhythm of the environment in which they are created and can therefore remain in place for only a few minutes. <div>Through his drawings, sculptures and performances, Julien Fargetton searches for the origin of things that surround him. For several weeks, the artist settled in Planoise district. Vladimir Turner

<div>Vladimir Turner's work combines both art in public space and activism. Here he climbed the statue in memory of P.J. Proudhon, "father of anarchy" born in Besançon to adorn it with a pendant composed of a large gold chain and a paving stone. 50 years after May 68, Vladimir thus proposes a critique of the commodification of revolt and political art.<br>Project created within the scope of the “8th Bien Urbain edition”, June 2018</div>

Thomas Lateur

<div>This participative work was created by the artist Thomas Lateur and the little hands of many festival-goers during the Bien Urbain Festival.&nbsp;<br>Graphist, artist, typographist, skateboarder, this Besançon born and raised has a ruler, a compass in his hands and palm tree in his mind. His abstract murals are influenced by architecture and modular games. He uses them to try new things, away from rigid geometric grids.<br>Project created within the scope of the “9th Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

Helmut Smits

<div>Originally from the Netherlands, where brick is a very popular material for building houses, the artist was charmed by the irregularity of the Chailluz stone facades in Besançon (a local stone, listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site). He chose to color the entire facade of a house in Place Marulaz with chalk, creating an amazing, playful and dreamlike patchwork of colors, letting the house express itself and thus momentarily breaking the uniform aesthetic while preserving the local heritage.<br>Project created within the scope of the “8th Bien Urbain edition”, June 2018</div>

<div>A Brussels-based collective of three artists with a passion for fine art, Hell'O Monsters create incredibly detailed, seductive and disturbing scenes. They have a unique approach to mural painting where the finesse and consistency of their shared images makes it impossible to tell who did what. In the dreamlike paintings of the collective, ornament becomes camouflage and weirdness becomes aesthetics. Here a strange character seems to flee after a drinking party.&nbsp;<br>Project created within the scope of the “3rd Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

<div>Through the works that Gabriel Specter created in Besançon, it is possible to realize the multiplicity of his work. Between hyper realistic wall paintings, installations and collages, the artist has developed an extremely rich plastic vocabulary in close connection with the city.&nbsp;<br>Project created within the scope of the “5th Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

<div>Former member of the Ripoulin Brothers collective with the artist OX, Bla+ has also continued to paint, leaving the street but not the colorful aesthetics of the 80s. He works around acidulous characters more or less understandable, falsely disturbing, to be found like pop-up paintings in different places of Besançon. Project created within the scope of the “7th Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

The Wa

<div>Heir to the impertinent aspect of graffiti, The Wa questions and destabilizes by small touches the codes imposed by the public or private power, as answers to nonsense that has become a little too common.<br>He created this work in tribute to Socrate (It is a pun : “Con” means “Idiot” and “Vaincu” means “Defeated”). “Convaincu” means “convinced”, it is a reference to the famous Socrate sentence “All I know is (that) I know nothing”.<br>Project created within the scope of the “7th Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

<div>Hyuro, flagship artist of the new muralism, was invited to participate in the Bien Urbain Festival to imagine “Juste Ici association” the festival lineup. Hyuro has created a new artwork. Through this mural, he wanted to express the importance, even more for women, of not being afraid to stand up and express themselves, straight on their feet, in the public space.<br>Project created within the scope of the “9th Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

<div>A tireless jack-of-all-trades and impulsive painter, Ekta is often brought to collaborate with craftsmen and amateurs, to realize installations, in Besançon, through an intense production. Franco Fasoli Jaz

<div>After years of intensive graffiti practice in Buenos Aires, Franco Fasoli looked at other ways of painting in the street, whether by the technique, often experimental, or by the pictorial style. He became known under the name of Jaz for his atypical way of representing human encounters, situations or feelings through scenes where animals and geometric forms intersect. Phenomena of masses or duels with bare hands are subjects that are often found in his paintings, where the bodies merge in a dead-end street.&nbsp;<br>Mural painting created within the scope of the “4th Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

<div>Back in Besançon after a painting in the city and experiments with Eltono in 2012, Momo has since gained the recognition he deserves and is now one of the most popular muralists. His unique combination of abstract forms with a vector-like appearance, his meticulous way of painting and matching forms, or even colors and surfaces. After a lively meeting with the CM1 and CM2 classes of Fanart Elementary School, Momo was able to finalize his paintings on the walls of their school, under their cheerful cheers!&nbsp;<br>Project created within the scope of the “4th Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

Mathieu Tremblin

<div>Mathieu Tremblin, member of the “Frères Ripoulins” and Epos 257, respectively invited at the “Bien Urbain Festival” in 2014 and 2015, realised a series of spontaneous actions. Investing the outdoor space of abandoned shops by installations, performances or changing urban codes, their interventions question us about our relationship with consumption society, publicity or nature.<br>Project created within the scope of the “8th Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

<div>Far from the idea of decorating the city, Escif sees his murals as pretexts for exchange. The context is for him one of the essential ingredients, the imagery that emerges above all at the service of the dialogue that he wishes to engage with the passers-by. During a workshop with the students of the Pasteur High School, Escif wondered if new walls should be built to protect the Unesco listed walls. He then reproduces this listed railing seen on the balcony of the house.&nbsp;</div>

<div>In Besançon and with the teenagers students of the college Diderot, the choice of Cyprien Desrez went to the manufacture of sandstone bricks. The college students each represented a region or a country on each brick, with the final aim of gathering them all in an English or Flemish layout on the entrance wall of their college. Supported and helped by the CFA Vauban team, Cyprien and the SEGPA students were finally able to put their bricks on the entrance wall of the college.&nbsp;</div>

Format To Share 

<div>For this 5th edition of the mural newspaper “On s’la raconte” made with the association “Miroirs de Femmes-Reflets du Monde”, we invited the artist Cyprien Desrez to imagine an illustrated universe around the “Village du Monde” event which took place in Planoise. Cyprien is a young artist who likes to travel and discover new territories and collect information (images, words, languages, gestures) related to cultural identities to translate them.</div>

<div>Surprised and amused by the posters of “fresh paintings” present throughout the city, often glued after the interventions of “anti-graffiti” services, the Czech artist wanted to make a mural ! Constantly written in the same size and with the same typography, Deana made a true copy, painting and giant format.&nbsp;<br>Project created within the scope of the “8th Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

<div>The team of the “Centre Dramatique National” (CDN) Franche-Comté (FR) has long wished to call upon the association “Juste Ici”, to imagine a mural on one of the outside walls of the theater. It is done! We invited together Thibault Quittelier and Romaric Jeannin, printing artists, founders of TANK Atelier. From their artisanal printing workshop comes out an artwork playing on the “micro” and the “macro”. The “macro”, a mise en abîme of wefts, more than a hundred printed sheets of three different patterns, forming a large psychedelic and very vibrant kaleidoscope. A kind of giant faceted ball for the CDN’s Guinguette, as the artists said !</div>

Erosie

<div>Erosie works in a series of paintings, cycles, which have coexisted for over 15 years. He began painting through graffiti and lettering, and today his practice navigates between these forms and a more conceptual and often radical approach. He is one of the fervent animators of urban art without blinkers. <div>For this third edition of BAM!, a cycle of participatory artistic residencies that question the uses of the Bouloie in Besançon, the Bivouac workshop and the Bim crew take the lead, in partnership with a student association : the GNUF. <div>Korean artist, Jazoo Yang is especially interested in the evolution of cities and the nostalgic poetry that emerges from popular neighborhoods demolished at high speed. Julie Ménin

<div>This 5m mural mixing illustrations and lettering was imagined as a tribute to the writer Stendhal. Rather than creating a classic portrait, Julie Mélin and Renaud Vigourt chose to focus on Stendhal’s literary work. They began by learning about the relationship between Stendhal and Besançon, which is essentially found in his novel “Le Rouge et le Noir”. Both of them had fun with the names of the protagonists. The street came alive with passers-by, including Stendhal himself, his pocket-watch in hand, encouraging new winks and stories in this little world mixing generations, trades, wacky cyclists and cats on hot roofs.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Gabriel Specter gives full meaning to the expression 'in situ' through his work: each intervention takes shape according to the place where it is visible to passers-by. Between hyper realistic murals, installations and collages, the artist has deployed an extremely rich plastic vocabulary with a close link to the city of Besançon, precisely with this mural painting.&nbsp;<br>Project created within the scope of the “5th Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

<div>French artist, Eltono has been working in the public space for over fifteen years, notably through mural painting. He now plays with lines to repeat this adaptable form and make it a graphic motif constant enough to be identified but at the same time changeable enough to fit a given context. It is the way he articulates the lines and the colors he uses that allows him to adapt to the surfaces he paints on. The inhabitants of the Grette and Butte districts were able to create a mural with the artist Eltono. These painting workshops were a good opportunity for the participants and the parents accompanying their children to meet Eltono and to question him on his artistic practice.</div>

A Géométrie Variable 

<div>This Neapolitan tandem is more interested in the porosity between art and everyday life than in the imposing aspect of their work. This mural painting realized for the Bien Urbain Festival represents people who seem to fight each other, as indicated by its name "Tutti contro tutti" which means "All against all". Project created within the scope of the “6th Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

<div>Self-taught and explorer, Nelio has built his identity through his numerous travels. Adapting to the context and his desires, inspired by architecture, he composes with geometric shapes, destructured lines and textures effects. On this walled door located in an alley in the Battant district, Nelio's shapes and colors are integrated like camouflage.&nbsp;<br>Project created within the scope of the “2nd Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

<div>Back in Besançon after a painting in the city and experiments with Eltono in 2012, Momo has since gained the recognition he deserves and is now one of the most popular muralists. His unique combination of abstract forms with a vector-like appearance, his meticulous way of painting and matching forms, or even colors and surfaces.&nbsp;<br>Mural painting created within the scope of the “2nd Bien Urbain Festival edition”.</div>

<div>On the occasion of the “Ateliers pieds d’immeubles”, the Juste Ici association proposed furniture construction workshops to the children and inhabitants of Planoise neighborhood in Besançon. Following workshops to consult the inhabitants, the volunteers Léonie and Marine, had the idea of these mobile wooden structures, allowing inhabitants to sit alone or in groups, to lie down, to play… The 3 structures can be grouped together or displayed on a public square or in a garden.</div>

Puzzle à vivre 

<div>Sam3 is a drawer and painter. The symbolic line and the figures in black flatness of this Spanish artist are easily recognizable.<br>In this work, two characters are looking at each other through a telescop nearby the Astronomical Observatory of Besançon. Touching with modesty the intimate and the universal, tension and softness are felt in his paintings. Tellas

<div>Originally from Sardinia, Tellas is not the stereotypical urban megalopolis painter. The recurring motifs in his work are borrowed from the natural repertoire: leaves and patterns evoking stone become a focal point in his work. In a vegetable tangle underlining colors of the visible hills from the nearby streets, it seems that meteorites are falling down from the sky.<br>Project created within the scope of the “4th Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

Vilaine Frange

<div>Vincent Jacquin aka "SMALL", freelance graphic designer, has been running the SMALL STUDIO studio since 2007. Great lover of minimal and pure graphics, he plays on references and universally identifiable codes. Invited in Besançon, he collaborates and paints this mural with the artist and illustrator Vilaine Frange. The fresco is on one of the walls of a Hyperboisson store, as the different objects represented remind it.</div>

Magnetic

<div>On the occasion of the European artistic exchange project “Recover the streets”, 6 artists were invited to work with neighbors to "reclaim the street", create murals but also create a shared square and garden in a previously inaccessible space.&nbsp;<br>One of them, Magnetic, is a multi-faceted freelance artist. He is as interested in live model painting as he is in street art or woodworking. His starting environment is graphic design and web design. On the occasion of the project, he proposes three works made with Acrylic paint and posca on wood.</div>

Sièges Totem

<div>Through the works that Gabriel Specter created in Besançon, it is possible to realize the multiplicity of his work. Between hyper realistic wall paintings, installations and collages, the artist has developed an extremely rich plastic vocabulary in close connection with the city. Project created within the scope of the “5th Bien Urbain edition”.</div>

<div>In 20 years, 108's work has gone from traditional graffiti to abstract forms, yellow, then black and finally multicolored, which all have organic roots. The vaporous and dark atmosphere emerges in particular in his works from Bisontine. His abstract painting organic and almost floating forms, conducive to contemplation, even meditation. Nicolas Filloque & Claire Malvoti

<div>The association “Juste Ici” warmed up our new Risograph at the Atelier Superseñor ! The artists Claire Malvolti and Nicolas Filloque designed a series of posters with random combinations, carrying messages that are both poetic and political. Already displayed on the panels of our wall newspapers we’ll soon display Besançon's free panels !</div>

Agostino Iacurci

<div>With his very figurative and close to the illustration, Agostino Iacurci chose to create a triptych fresco on three walls of student residences on the Besançon university campus. Three walls for three characters and three generations. At first glance, these three characters look very similar, all in profile, with the same chromatic ranges. But on closer inspection, they are quite different. The first smokes a pipe. The second holds a long view in his hands. The third breathes in bubbles, birds flying around him: the 3 terrestrial levels (water, earth, sky) and the 3 generations (youth, adulthood, old age) are represented in this triptych.<br>Project created within the scope of the “2nd Bien Urbain Festival edition”.</div>
