Gaston Berghmans tour

Discover Merksem through the eyes of one of Flanders’ greatest comedians on this unique street art trail, entirely dedicated to Gaston Berghmans. Along the way, you will encounter the electrical substation that hosted the very first piece of street art in Merksem, as well as a massive portrait of the local comedian on the street that now bears his name.

The walk begins at the Merksem library; in the parking lot next to the impressive murals, you can also spot a few subtle nods to Gaston on the pillars beneath the library building. From there, the route leads you past various artworks that celebrate Gaston’s life, humor, and legacy in a contemporary style. Highlights include a subtle tribute by the artist Case Maclaim on Victor Roosensplein, but the trail is, above all, a scavenger hunt. Brussels-based artist Jaune has hidden 20 stencils throughout the streets, featuring iconic characters from Gaston’s career, including his inseparable partner, Leo Martin. Keep a sharp eye out, as some of these pieces blend almost seamlessly into the urban landscape.

The route concludes at a truly special location: the iconic Trammezandlei, immortalized in perhaps the most famous sketch by Gaston Berghmans. In this way, the walk bridges the gap between street art, local heritage, humor, and nostalgia, showcasing how a beloved folk hero continues to live on within the streets of his cherished Merksem.
