Kakirra is the Kaurna word for the Moon - a male divine being who was the first to ascend to the sky and encouraged his wife Tindo (the Sun) and others to follow him into the heavens.
The hero character is Tarnda (Male Red Kangaroo) lying on a meeting place. The traditional name for the Adelaide Plains is Tarndanyangga which means Land of the Red Kangaroo Dreaming. The circle shows men, women and children sitting around the campfires. This circle artwork has been painted in an angle view, mixing the traditional style of painting from above with the contemporary landscape view.
The stem of the red gum flowers represents the Karrawirra Parri (River Torrens) flowing from the hills to the blue ocean, enabling the production life along the way. The landscape on which Tarnda sits is a depiction of Kaurna Yerta, Kaurna Country. Situated at the approximate location of Adelaide, is a Kaurna shield. This shield is a representation of the bounding terraces and 4 cardinal points of North, East, South and West. Kaurna people view the Karrawirra Parri as the earthly reflection of the "Sky River", the Wodli Parri (Milky Way), which helps to guide the Kaurna community between the physical and astral planes. The Goondooloo (Eagle) is a character referenced in Kaurna Dreaming associating the Southern Cross with an Eagle's Claw.
