Alma Castellana

Description

ENGLISH:

Fresh illustration, full of style and personality. It portrays a young woman with a modern aesthetic who has her own identity, a look that would not go unnoticed in the crowd.

However, amid all this modernity, we see that her clothing is made from patchwork pieces of traditional Castilian regional costumes.

The coat reminds us of typical regional skirts; the collar represents a Manila shawl; even the hat, sewn from fabric scraps, incorporates the “yerbas” scarf—simple and very popular looms—which, when joined together, create a hat using the patchwork technique, extremely creative.

With this illustration, Nano wanted to highlight the value of our traditional identity and show that it coexists perfectly with the modern world. We are always copying and seeking foreign icons—British, American… when we have an incredibly rich cultural heritage to be proud of.

Alma Serrana aims to show young audiences that what is ours is cool: our traditions, our identity, manteos, rodaos, corpiñós, looms decorated with cutwork, prints or embroidered motifs of various kinds, corduroy, linen—everything is part of our people, makes us different, and deep down, all of us are made from scraps of these garments.

Alma Serrana looks at the viewer and shows castanets held in her hand, poised to make them sound—a modern woman who proudly displays her regional roots, who does not want to lose her foundation, that of her grandparents. A Castilian icon that could transcend our borders and establish itself in other countries, if only we knew how to promote ourselves as they do.

This work is part of the collection of murals in the Santa Catalina neighborhood, promoted by the Santa Catalina Merchants’ Association (Asociación de Comerciantes de Santa Catalina).
