The Crystal Ship vernieuwt in 2025 rond het thema 'CHANGE'. Het festival blijft trouw aan zijn roots, maar verwelkomt nieuwe kunstenaars en frisse perspectieven. Kunst in de openbare ruimte wordt ingezet om maatschappelijke, ecologische en persoonlijke transformatie te verbeelden. De werken nodigen voorbijgangers uit tot dialoog en reflectie over de wereld én zichzelf.

Judith de Leeuw, beter bekend als JDL, is een Amsterdamse street artist die zich – bijna letterlijk – van de straat omhoog heeft gewerkt. Als tiener belandde ze in een jeugdinstelling, maar vandaag is ze een van de bekendste namen in de wereld van street art. Judith schildert altijd in zwart-wit, met accenten van turquoise en soms gouden cirkels. In haar werk draait het vaak om sociale ongelijkheid.
Als kind was ze een rebel. Uit protest begon ze met graffiti, een daad van verzet. Op haar achttiende ontdekte ze grootschalige muurschilderingen en wist meteen: dit is het. Sindsdien gebruikt ze de stad als haar canvas en de muren als haar stem. Onder het thema CHANGE ziet ze vooral een wereld in transitie. “Iedereen ziet het”, zegt ze. “De wereld staat onder druk. Politieke verschuivingen volgen elkaar in razendsnel tempo op. Daarom schilder ik ‘Justitia’ die letterlijk van sokkel valt, een symbool van rechtvaardigheid, in een tijd waarin dat woord meer dan ooit onder vuur ligt.”
Dát is de kracht van kunst in de openbare ruimte. “Street art is geen kunst die zich verschuilt achter de muren van een galerie. Het raakt mensen op een manier die traditionele kunst soms niet kan. Je overstijgt dat kleine nichegroepje in een museum. Street art heeft een activistische ondertoon en past beter bij me dan ‘klassieke’ kunst. Wij, als kunstenaars, dragen verantwoordelijkheid voor wat we de wereld insturen. Wat je op straat ziet, bepaalt ook de mentaliteit op straat. Je krijgt een podium – en dat podium kan iets veranderen. Zelfs al is het maar een gesprek tussen twee mensen. In een wereld vol uitdagingen en ongelijkheid lijkt het me vreemd om dat podium níét te gebruiken.”

Judith de Leeuw, better known as JDL, is an Amsterdam street artist who - almost literally - worked from the street up. As a teenager she ended up in a youth institution, but today she is one of the best known names in the world of street art. Judith always paints in black and white, with accents of turquoise and sometimes gold circles. In her work it is often about social inequality.

As a child she was a rebel. In protest she started with Graffiti, an act of resistance. At the age of eighteen she discovered large -scale murals and knew immediately: this is it. Since then she has used the city as her canvas and the walls as her voice. Under the theme change, she mainly sees a world in transition. "Everyone sees it," she says. "The world is under pressure. Political shifts follow each other at lightning speed. That is why I paint "Lady Justitce" who literally falls from her pedestal, a symbol of justice, at a time when that word is under fire more than ever."

That is the power of art in public space. “Street Art is not art that hides behind the walls of a gallery. It touches people in a way that traditional art is sometimes not possible. You go beyond that little niche group in a museum. Street Art has an activist undertone and fits better with me than" classical "art. We, as artists, bear responsibility for what we get the world and that you also instures you - that you are in the world - that you also in the world - that you are in the world - that you also in the street.
