On 21 October 2024, artist Evert Thielen (1954) reveiled this mural in Lohofstraat in the centre of Venlo. It is a reproduction of his artwork “Groot verlangen” (Great Longing) and is part of the exhibition “De Luiken Open” (The Shutters Open) in the van Bommel van Dam Museum.

Evert Thielen creates highly detailed paintings and multi-panel works: monumental installations constructed from several panels painted on both sides. Due to the enormous richness of detail and the artistic craftsmanship, his work is very popular with a wide audience.

Thielen finds his inspiration in the painting of earlier centuries. Early in his career, he researched the techniques and materials used by late medieval masters such as the Van Eyck brothers. Since then, he has been painting with homemade paint on wood panels. With astonishing precision, he creates scenes that are recognisable and true to life at first glance. But his work also contains many surrealistic elements and symbolism. Those who delve deeper into his art discover a layered reality full of double meanings and art-historical references.

Artist Michel Alders painted the image on the side wall of the former Hotel Puur. He did this under the guidance of Vincent Huibers from Venlo, who has already created several murals in this municipality. It is a lasting reminder for the city of one of its most famous artists. The exhibition was on display until 21 February 2025. The mural, on the other hand, can be admired permanently.

Kunstenaar Evert Thielen (1954) onthulde op 21 oktober 2024 in de Lohofstraat in de binnenstad van Venlo deze muurschildering. Het is een reproductie van zijn kunstwerk ‘Groot verlangen’ en maakt deel uit van de tentoonstelling “De Luiken Open” in het museum van Bommel van Dam.

Evert Thielen maakt zeer nauwkeurig uitgewerkte schilderijen en veelluiken: monumentale installaties, opgebouwd uit verschillende panelen die aan beide zijden zijn beschilderd. Vanwege die enorme detailrijkheid en het schilderkunstig vakmanschap is zijn werk erg geliefd bij een groot publiek.

Thielen vindt zijn inspiratie in de schilderkunst van vroegere eeuwen. Al vroeg in zijn carrière deed hij onderzoek naar de technieken en materialen van laatmiddeleeuwse meesters als de gebroeders Van Eyck. Sindsdien schildert hij met zelfbereide verf op houtpaneel. Met een verbluffende precisie creëert hij op het eerste gezicht herkenbare en natuurgetrouwe taferelen. Maar zijn werk bevat ook veel surrealistische elementen en symboliek. Wie dieper in zijn kunst duikt, ontdekt een gelaagde werkelijkheid vol dubbele betekenissen en kunsthistorische verwijzingen.

Kunstenaar Michel Alders schilderde de afbeelding op de zijgevel van het voormalige Hotel Puur. Hij deed dit onder leiding van Venlonaar Vincent Huibers, die al meerdere murals realiseerde in deze gemeente. Het is een blijvende herinnering voor de stad aan een van haar meest bekende kunstenaars. De expositie was tot en met 21 februari 2025 te bezichtigen. De muurschildering daarentegen is blijvend te bewonderen.
