Nazif Lopulissa (Tiel, 1991) lives and works in Rotterdam. He graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy in 2017. In his work he explores the formal language of objects, places and situations from his daily life, both 2D and 3D.

When five-year-old Nazif Lopulissa wanted a pet turtle because he thought the Ninja Turtles were so cool, his mother advised him to draw one. That way he could make as many turtles as he wanted. It is his earliest memory of the power of the creative process. As artist nasbami, he offers a counterbalance to the speed of our society. By painting and drawing, he reflects on all the little moments of the day, and the end result allows him to relive everything he experiences during the making as a flashback.

During the week of POW! WOW! Rotterdam 2020, nasbami made a similar wall relief at the Putselaan. He made a composition from parts that typify his work, combined with floral elements and graceful cut-outs. He placed this on the wall by applying a layer of concrete, assuming that he would later provide it with a color.

When the concrete relief layer was finished, he realized that the entire artwork was actually finished too. The material's own hue, set against that of the wall itself, looks more subtle. As a result, this wall relief stands out even more to those who really look, and it has a timeless appearance. Whether it was placed in the 1970s or last week is no longer clear from the context that the work itself offers. This facade relief is made of concrete, as if the image seeps directly from the underlying wall. The almost mystical flair that it gets as a result remains endlessly fascinating.

Toen de vijfjarige Nazif Lopulissa een schildpad als huisdier wilde omdat hij de Ninja Turtles zo gaaf vond, adviseerde zijn moeder hem om die te tekenen. Zo kon hij zoveel schildpadden maken als hij wilde. Het is zijn vroegste herinnering aan de kracht van het creatieve proces. Als kunstenaar nasbami biedt hij een tegenwicht aan de snelheid van onze maatschappij. Door te schilderen en tekenen staat hij stil bij alle kleine momenten van de dag, en het eindresultaat stelt hem in staat alles wat hij meemaakte tijdens het maken als een flashback opnieuw te beleven.

Gedurende de week van POW! WOW! Rotterdam 2020 maakte nasbami aan de Putselaan een soortgelijk muurreliëf. Hij maakte een compositie uit onderdelen die zijn werk typeren, gecombineerd met florale elementen en zwierige uitsneden. Deze plaatste hij op de muur door er een laag beton op aan te brengen, in de veronderstelling deze later nog van een kleur te voorzien.

Toen de betonnen relieflaag af was, besefte hij dat heel het kunstwerk dat eigenlijk ook al was. De eigen tint van het material afgezet tegen die van de muur zelf oogt er subtieler door. Daardoor valt dit wandrelief des te meer op voor degene die écht kijkt en krijgt het een tijdloze uitstraling. Of het in de jaren ’70, of vorige week geplaatst is, is vanuit de context die het werk zelf biedt niet meer op te maken.

Dit gevelreliëf is gemaakt van beton, alsof het beeld rechtstreeks uit de onderliggende muur sijpelt. De haast mystieke flair die het daardoor krijgt, blijft eindeloos boeien.
