Om 100 jaar Luchtbal extra in de verf te zetten, zorgt district Antwerpen voor een nieuw street art werk in de wijk. En niet zomaar eentje.

SMOK vertelde ons waar hij zijn inspiratie haalde: “Ik heb een heleboel oude foto’s van Luchtbal bekeken en vond er zo een aantal interessante van een meisje in een wit jurkje. Ik koos de afbeelding van een jong meisje (van wat leek op een communiefoto), een symbool van onschuld en nostalgie, gedeeld in verhalen met buurtbewoners. Dus daar wou ik wel iets mee doen, dat dromerige over vroeger. En zo kwam ik ook bij die luchtbellen, die ook iets dromerigs en jeugdigs hebben. Ik heb dan een meisje uit Luchtbal gevraagd om model te staan voor het uiteindelijk ontwerp. Zo verbinden we het verleden aan het heden. Ze zweeft in de lucht op een fragiele zeepbel, een speelse knipoog naar de naam Luchtbal. De wervelende wolken en de rusteloze wind weerspiegelen de geest en de beweging van de buurt zelf."

Zelf heeft SMOK ook een bijzondere band met de Luchtbal: "Mijn vader heeft als kind ook enkele jaren in Luchtbal gewoond. Mijn comeback als street artist heb ik ook te danken aan Luchtbal. Toen hier 12 jaar geleden het street art festival Day One plaatsvond, ben ik na een tiental jaren stilte terug beginnen murals maken. Vrienden vroegen om toch nog eens een keertje te komen meedoen aan de graffiti jam, en zo ben ik terug aan de slag gegaan, en nu werk ik al enkele jaren full time als graffiti artiest."

To celebrate Luchtbal's 100th anniversary, the Antwerp district is creating a new piece of street art in the neighborhood.

SMOK told us where he drew his inspiration: “I looked at a lot of old photos of Luchtbal and found some interesting ones of a girl in a white dress. I chose the image of a young girl (from what looked like a communion photo), a symbol of innocence and nostalgia, shared in stories with local residents. So I wanted to do something with that dreamy quality of the past. That's how I came up with the air bubbles, which also have a dreamy and youthful quality. I then asked a girl from Luchtbal to model for the final design. This way, we connect the past with the present. She floats in the air on a fragile soap bubble, a playful nod to the name 'Luchtbal'. The swirling clouds and the restless wind reflect the spirit and movement of the neighborhood itself.”

SMOK also has a special bond with Luchtbal: "My father lived in Luchtbal for a few years as a child. I also owe my comeback as a street artist to Luchtbal. When the Day One street art festival took place here 12 years ago, I started creating murals again after a decade of silence. Friends asked me to join the graffiti jam again, so I got back into it, and now I've been working full-time as a graffiti artist for several years."
