JW Van De Maele schilderde naast het werk van kunstenares Prisca Tankwey en zijn werk sluit mooi aan. “Prisca focust in haar werk op kinderen van de wereld en zo kwam ik al snel op het idee om iets rond Afrikaanse dieren te doen, in hetzelfde kleurenschema.” De keuze voor een Afrikaans dier viel al snel op de jaguar. 

“Eerder maakte ik een chimpansee en een ijsvogel. De dierenwereld is zowat mijn signatuur geworden. Ik filosofeer graag over onze planeet. Met de jaguar gaat het over de confrontatie met de schoonheid van de natuur. De grootste uitdaging van deze tijd, de toekomst van onze planeet." deelt de artiest.
 

Wie goed oplet, kan misschien al raden dat Van De Maele een achtergrond heeft in de schilderkunst. “Ik volgde een opleiding schilderkunst aan Sint-Lucas en werk vooral rond realisme en retro futurisme. Bij streetart is dat anders. Daar ga ik veel illustratiever te werk. Ik wil creaties maken die 100% universeel zijn en waar alle lagen van de bevolking zich in kunnen herkennen. Ik vergelijk streetart vaak met proza, terwijl schilderkunst eerder aanleunt tegen poëzie.”

In tegenstelling tot vele streetart artiesten gebruikt Van De Maele geen spuitbussen maar schilderborstels. Hij maakt de vergelijking met fotografie. Sommigen maken hun beeld analoog, anderen digitaal. Net zoals je kan kiezen tussen schilderen of verf spuiten. “Persoonlijk ben ik geen fan van spuiten omwille van de industriële look. Met borstels kan je veel meer textuur geven aan het werk. Het hoeft niet allemaal perfect te zijn. Die imperfecties en ruigheid zorgen juist voor meer karakter. Op dat vlak ben ik wat old school.”

JW Van De Maele painted alongside the work of artist Prisca Tankwey and his work fits in nicely. “Prisca focuses in her work on children of the world and that is how I quickly came up with the idea of doing something about African animals, in the same color scheme.” The choice for an African animal quickly fell on the jaguar.
“Earlier I painted a chimpanzee and a kingfisher. The animal world has become my muse. I like to philosophize about our planet. The jaguar is about the confrontation with the beauty of nature. The greatest challenge of our time, the future of our planet." shares the artist.
 
If you pay close attention, you may already guess that Van De Maele has a background in painting. “I studied painting at Sint-Lucas and mainly work around realism and retro futurism. Street art is different. I work much more illustratively there. I want to make creations that are 100% universal and that all layers of the population can identify with. I often compare street art to prose, while painting is closer to poetry.”
Unlike many street art artists, Van De Maele does not use spray cans, but painting brushes. He makes the comparison with photography. Some make their images analog, others digital. Just like you can choose between painting or spraying paint. “Personally, I'm not a fan of spray painting because of the industrial look. With brushes you can give much more texture to the work. It doesn't all have to be perfect. Those imperfections and roughness provide more character. I am a bit old school in that respect.”
