In 2015, the city of Vila do Conde, Portugal, began a celebration of a century since the famed artists Sonia and Robert Delaunay first set foot in the town, marking their lasting influence on contemporary art. To honor their legacy, the Vila do Conde City Council commissioned a vibrant mural on the south facade of the Centro Escolar Bento de Freitas, transforming it into a living homage to the couple’s groundbreaking work.

The mural was designed by painter Isabel Lhano, whose vision was inspired by the Delaunays’ unique style, blending geometry, bold colors, and movement. She worked closely with local artists Manuel Martins, known as “Meonerock,” and Arménio Torre, who brought her vision to life with their meticulous execution. Together, they created a piece that captures the spirit of the Delaunays’ work and its enduring relevance.

This mural serves as the first instalment in a series of events organised by Vila do Conde to celebrate Sonia and Robert’s time there, marking a hundred years since their presence. The mural stands not only as a tribute but as a reminder of Vila do Conde’s connection to the Delaunays and to the modern art movement they helped pioneer.
