Fountain is a concrete structure that evokes a time when Reston was brand new. Much of the artwork and architecture in the new community used concrete and brutalist forms. This structure, when originated, was the cornerstone to a plaza dedicated to Dag Hammarskjold, and water flowed freely through it. Today the plaza, and indeed the fountain are in some disrepair, and the memory of the UN Secretary General as well as the former International Center nearby (now Virginia Spine Institute) have faded.
