The Leij is a small river that has traditionally defined the landscape of Goirle. Fields, farms, and (later on) residential areas arose along its banks.
The artworks on both walls together form a story, like a visual walk along the river. They are calming and positive, with warm colors and compositions that match the scale of the buildings.
The Leij is the central theme here. The Leij brings water, life and connection into the community. She is a lifeline in both, the literal and the figurative sense of the word.

The murals show how nature, art, and community reinforce each other. Both murals literally turn the neighborhood into a place where the outdoors feels like home, an open living room by the water.

With "Beneath the Surface" we literally dive into De Leij. We see the light falling through the water, the stems of water lilies, and the sky above us. Here, the river itself becomes visible. No animals, no busy imagery, just water, light, and movement. This part of the series offers space and tranquility, and emphasizes that De Leij is not just a backdrop, but a living ecosystem.

De Leij is een klein riviertje dat van oudsher het landschap van Goirle heeft bepaald. Langs de oevers ontstonden akkers, boerderijen en (later) woonwijken.

De kunstwerken op beide muren vormen samen een verhaal, als een visuele wandeling langs de rivier. Ze stralen rust en positiviteit uit, met warme kleuren en composities die aansluiten bij de schaal van de gebouwen.

De Leij is hier het centrale thema. De Leij brengt water, leven en verbinding in de gemeenschap. Ze is een levensader in zowel letterlijke als figuurlijke zin.

De muurschilderingen laten zien hoe natuur, kunst en gemeenschap elkaar versterken. Beide muurschilderingen maken van de buurt letterlijk een plek waar het buitenleven als thuis voelt, een open woonkamer aan het water.

Met “Beneath the Surface” duiken we letterlijk in De Leij. We zien het licht dat door het water valt, de stengels van waterlelies en de lucht boven ons. Hier wordt de rivier zelf zichtbaar. Geen dieren, geen drukke beelden, alleen water, licht en beweging. Dit deel van de serie biedt ruimte en rust, en benadrukt dat De Leij niet alleen een decor is, maar een levend ecosysteem.
