The mural Looking to a Better Future, located at 211 Newtownards Road in east Belfast, explores the transition from a past shaped by violence and social conflict towards a more peaceful and inclusive future. It reflects on Northern Ireland’s history and the legacy of the decades-long conflict known as the Troubles.
The contrast between past and future forms the central visual concept. The past is represented through watchtowers, paramilitary figures and imagery associated with violence, imprisonment and conflict. In contrast, the colourful future section depicts schoolchildren, sport, education and civic life. Images of Belfast City Hall and references to culture, empowerment, equality, diversity, multiculturalism and human rights express aspirations for social progress and greater opportunities for future generations.
The mural conveys a message of hope by setting a history of division and confrontation against the possibility of peaceful coexistence. Understanding, equality and reconciliation are central themes of this visual juxtaposition.
