The story started in 2022 when a graffiti tag on the facade of the church created a huge media and
political controversy. Instead of condemning the director of the archive and curator of the basilica,Jordi Sacasas, approached the B-Murals urban art center in search of dialogue, inspired by a similar intervention in a church in Cologne. This conversation sparked the project as we see it today. People already are speculating about it, is it adepiction of a mother and a son, the virgin Marie perhaps.... "Formally, she is a mother with a son, and then each one has to make the image their own. Love is a universal value: it is a mother who accompanies her child until she fends for herself, hence the name of 'parenting' ".: explains Aryz. The initial proposal was based on a list of values inherent to the basilica no religious values, but universal topics like friendship, generosity & love.
The project almost bounced because of lack of funding but it was too important to let go so Aryz financed it for 85%,explains and thanks his audience on Instagram: "I would like to thank all the people who individually buy works of art or consume culture. Those who have purchased my work have made this piece possible. When you buy a book, go to the theater, or buy us a play, you are allowing us to continue dedicating ourselves to what we do. Thank you so much."
The relationship between the Church and contemporary urban art represents an interesting mix, churches stand as historic, sacred monuments, catalysts for incredibly rich pieces of art. They areperceived as refuge buildings, little permeable to the urban world of the street that surrounds them. While hosting artistic treasures, urban artists the adjacent streets to leave their mark"
