E lē tū fa’amauga se tagata

“E lē tū fa’amauga se tagata - no one stands alone, no one succeeds alone, and, for me, no one suffers alone.”
Fa’anānā Efeso Collins
1974-2024

A new mural in Manukau honors the late Fa’anānā Efeso Collins, a beloved South Auckland leader known for his advocacy for Pacific communities. The mural, located on Ronwood Ave, was created by renowned Mana Whenua artists Janine and Charles Williams, with support from Eke Panuku, the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board, and Collins’ family.

Collins, who passed away suddenly a year ago, dedicated his career to social justice and equity. He served as Chair of the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board, Auckland Councillor for the Manukau Ward (2016–2022), and later as a Member of Parliament after the 2023 elections. His legacy of kindness and leadership made him a respected figure across political and community lines.

The proverb E le tu fa’amauga se tagata—"Nobody stands alone"—reflects both Collins’ values and the mural’s message. The initiative began when Janine and Charles Williams, whose work is well-known in South Auckland, proposed the idea to Eke Panuku. The organization helped secure the location, ensuring the mural would stand as a lasting tribute to Collins’ impact.

Local Board Chair Apulu Reece Autagavaia emphasized the significance of this tribute, acknowledging Collins’ contributions to South Auckland and the Pacific community. The mural’s placement, facing Manukau Noa Iho/Hayman Park, ensures that his presence continues to inspire future generations.

Eke Panuku remains committed to reflecting the diverse cultures of Manukau through public art, with this mural serving as a powerful reminder of community solidarity and leadership.
