These silo first opened to receive grain in 1963. This artwork was designed by Sid Tapia who consulted with locals including school children and was selected by a committee from three designs. Depicted are sheep in a field, the yellow representing the yellow canola crop as part of the cropping program in the Merriwa district.

Slab huts were used by early settlers as shepherd's huts on large land stations, and the windmill represents Merriwa as 'the town of windmills'. The sheep are seen to be wearing red socks as part of the rich history of Merino sheep. Originally the socks were donated to the Festival of the Fleeces which began in 1990, but since then hundreds of sheep in red socks run down the main street every June long weekend.
