We Are Brixton
Description
This colourful mural bearing the words “WE ARE BRIXTON” can be found on a side wall of Marks & Spencer, 446–450 Brixton Road.
The artwork by @icreatenotdestroy pays tribute to Brixton’s history and the influence of the Windrush generation on British culture.
When the first large group of migrants from the Caribbean arrived in Britain in 1948 on the ship the HMT Empire Windrush, many of them found their first home in Brixton. The clothing style of the man and woman in the mural (the smart suits, hats and coats) is a direct reference to the iconic photographs of the migrants stepping off the ship in stylish attire at the time.
