De grijze muur van ontmoetingsruimte Het Forum van het OPZ  is dan omgetoverd tot een kunstwerk waarop een gigantische walvis tegen een achtergrond van vierkante kleuren prijkt. “Ik heb zelf wat studiewerk verricht over de psychiatrie, ik vond het vooral interessant om te praten met de begeleiders om zo hun echte ervaringen te weten te komen”, vertelt de Mechelse kunstenaar Gijs Vanhee.

“Als vertrekpunt had ik mijn figuurtje, de freebird, dat een lichaam van een mens en de kop van een vogel heeft. Dat figuurtje staat voor de verbeelding die we hebben, maar ook voor de vrijheid in ons hoofd. De freebird komt in al mijn werken voor, maar is altijd ingebed in de context. In dit geval stootte ik op het Bijbelse verhaal van Jona en de walvis. Dat verhaal kan je ook in een ander perspectief bekijken, want als je God weg waant heb je Jona die bepaalde stemmen in zijn hoofd hoort en daar gek van wordt. Jona wordt overboord gegooid van een vissersboot, maar wordt nadien opgeslorpt door een walvis”, aldus Vanhee.
“Daar vindt hij rust en zijn thuis. Op het terras spelen twee freebirds een gezelschapsspel, waarmee ze de zaken op een rijtje proberen te krijgen. Achteraan vaart nog iemand mee in zijn eigen mandje, die wel nog vasthangt aan de walvis. De begeleiders vertellen me immers dat de jongeren vaak een traject afleggen waarbij ze naar buiten gaan en nadien weer eens terugkomen. Zij blijven met elkaar verbonden.”

The gray wall of the Forum meeting room of the OPZ is then transformed into a work of art on which a gigantic whale stands against a background of square colours. “I did some research myself about psychiatry, I found it especially interesting to talk to the counselors in order to find out their real experiences,” says the Mechelen artist Gijs Vanhee.

“As a starting point I had my figure, the freebird, which has a human body and a bird's head. That figure represents the imagination we have, but also the freedom in our heads. The freebird appears in all my works, but is always embedded in the context. In this case I stumbled upon the biblical story of Jonah and the whale. You can also look at that story in a different perspective, because if you imagine God gone, you have Jonah hearing certain voices in his head and that drives him crazy. Jonah is thrown overboard from a fishing boat, but is then swallowed by a whale,” says Vanhee.
“There he finds peace and his home. Two freebirds are playing a board game on the terrace, trying to sort things out. At the back, someone else sails along in his own basket, which is still attached to the whale. After all, the counselors tell me that the young people often follow a trajectory in which they go outside and then come back again. They stay connected.”
