Saoirse don Phalaistín / Free Palestine

Description

This large-scale political mural at the corner of Hawthorn Street and Cavendish Street in West Belfast connects support for Palestine with Irish republican imagery. At its centre is the Irish-language slogan “Saoirse don Phalaistín”, meaning “Freedom for Palestine”. The Palestinian flag and visual elements associated with West Belfast’s political mural tradition reinforce the message. Other elements depict Ireland alongside the Irish tricolour and feature the slogan “England Get Out Of Ireland”.

The mural developed in several stages. On 9 August 2024, Belfast rap group Kneecap unveiled the Palestinian-themed section as the third mural in its series at this location. During the launch, the group said it wanted to draw attention to the suffering of Palestinians and express solidarity with them. The event also raised funds for people in Palestine.

The mural was expanded in the summer of 2025. The additional inscription across the upper section reads: “FREE PALESTINE – ISRAEL IS COMMITTING A GENOCIDE AGAINST THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE”. The completion of this section by local mural artists Micky Doc and Marty Lyons was documented in late August 2025.

The work brings together two political contexts: the history of Irish nationalism and solidarity with Palestinians.
