A Lifeboat From Despair

Description

Two people sit facing each other on the outstretched index fingers of enormous hands. The hands bear the words “hope” and “love”.

Created in 2016, the work is by Northern Irish street artist Emic, whose real name is Eoin McGinn. It is located on the Falls Road in West Belfast, near Shiels Street, and was commissioned by the local organisation Suicide Awareness & Support Group.

The mural raises awareness of suicide prevention and mental health. Rather than relying on dramatic imagery, it conveys its message through a pared-back, symbolic composition. The two figures meet at eye level, while the oversized hands serve as a source of connection and support. Hope and love emerge as central elements in helping people through difficult periods in their lives.

The title A Lifeboat From Despair reinforces this idea, suggesting a means of rescue from overwhelming distress. The mural is therefore more than a work of public art: it is a visible reminder of the importance of compassion, human connection and greater public awareness of mental health crises.
