Insects

The Dung Fly is the 1st out of 8 beautiful insects that are painted on an electricity house by Paul Watty ( @hiyawatty aka @paul_watty_art ) for the city of Tilburg.
These 8 walls are about transformation. The artist had been commissioned by the municipality of Tilburg to transform two utility boxes into real gems for the neighborhood. Once an eyesore, they have now become an eye-catching point of the area. Just like a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly, the butterfly was the final piece of the eight artworks that the artist has realized on these boxes. Similar to a green caterpillar that emerges as a beautiful butterfly, these utility boxes have undergone a remarkable metamorphosis.

The project is initiated by Stefan Jansen with some help from Spiegelglasfonds and district Zorgvlied where the walls are situated.

Paul Watty had his first experience as a graffiti writer in the streets of Tilburg and in Indonesia. He has a Moluccan background and when he was active on the streets for about a year, he travelled to Indonesia for six months, together with his grandparents. On the Moluccan island of Larat, he became the first graffiti artist. Back in Tilburg, he went skateboarding and spray-painting with friends on the former Van Gend & Loos area, where he put his first piece: Aku (Indonesian for 'I'). He regularly sprayed texts along the tracks.
"Pieces along the tracks are seen by many travellers. It gives a kick when you see your 'own' train passing by", says Watty. By spraying graffiti on the streets, he got commissions. "Most designers learn the trade at school," he says. "They have a chance to study. I learned how important it is to draw outside the lines on the streets. You have to have courage to do that."
