"Why did you decide to start doing urban art? Because in 2008/2009 the galleries I worked with closed and I found myself with a series of canvases that I couldn't show, which frustrated me. So I redid this series but on paper and I stuck it in the street. A month or two later I realized that I had feedback from people, a dialogue, like in the gallery, and that really appealed to me, so I continued. Then I met people in the street, who don't come to the gallery."

"Do you paint directly in the street or do you make collages?
No, I can't paint directly: I need to be alone, to be able to make mistakes, to be able to start all over again.
So I do everything in the workshop, I cut out and then I'm going to paste in the street. Afterwards I can make changes on site, but most of it is done in the workshop." - 2020 interview (in French) https://www.artistikrezo.com/art/philippe-herard-en-parlant-de-tout-le-monde-jessaie-denglober-des-problemes-plus-larges.html

"His main goal is to upgrade and aestheticize the urban landscape of Paris – with his interesting characters, Philippe Hérard writes stories and real urban poems. Tender and funny or sad and unpleasant, his installations are the mirror of our souls and the reflection of a changing society. In addition to creating his outdoors works, Hérard is a painter whose pieces are exhibited in France and abroad." - excerpt from short bio by Jacqueline Clyde of Widewalls @wdwalls May 9, 2016.
