Zwager: “I saw this painting in the National Museum in Cracow last year, it’s the biggest from Józef Chełmoński, one of my favourite Polish painters. I was quite impressed how realistic and big it was but never thought I could paint like that.
Aaaand then I was bored two weeks ago and decided that painting a 1:1 scale copy with not one, nor two or three, but four galloping horses would be difficult as f**k and keep me occupied for long enough. I also thought it would fit perfectly with the surroundings as the driver looks shocked is if he were to crash into the tree in front of him”.

‘Team of Four’ by Józef Chełmoński (1849–1914) is the best known and most frequently referred to example of peak achievements of naturalism in Polish paintings. This large-format canvas depicts a team of four horses rushing towards viewers while driven with passion by a Ukrainian peasant. The animals, painted in their natural size, seem to be bursting the surface of the painting, causing the illusion of unstoppable, constant movement. This impression is intensified by the contrast of vehemence of the main motif with the static background of the boundless and monotonous landscape. Also, the artist's employment of a limited colour scheme, i.e., the optically highlighted brown of the team of horses and the neutral greys of the background, contribute to the overall effect of speed and a headless rush.

Zwager: “Ik zag dit schilderij vorig jaar in het Nationaal Museum in Krakau, het is het grootste werk van Józef Chełmoński, een van mijn favoriete Poolse schilders. Ik was behoorlijk onder de indruk van hoe realistisch en groot het was, maar had nooit gedacht dat ik ook zo zou kunnen schilderen.
En toen verveelde ik me twee weken geleden en besloot ik dat het schilderen van een kopie op schaal 1:1 met niet één, niet twee of drie, maar vier galopperende paarden ontzettend moeilijk zou zijn en me lang genoeg bezig zou houden. Ik dacht ook dat het perfect bij de omgeving zou passen, omdat de koetsier geschokt lijkt alsof hij tegen de boom voor hem gaat botsen”.

'Team of Four' van Józef Chełmoński (1849–1914) is het bekendste en meest genoemde voorbeeld van het hoogtepunt van het naturalisme in de Poolse schilderkunst. Dit grootformaat doek toont een span van vier paarden dat op de toeschouwers afstormt, aangedreven door een Oekraïense boer. De dieren, geschilderd op ware grootte, lijken uit het doek te springen, waardoor de illusie ontstaat van een onstuitbare, constante beweging. Deze indruk wordt versterkt door het contrast tussen de heftigheid van het hoofdmotief en de statische achtergrond van het eindeloze en monotone landschap. Ook het gebruik van een beperkt kleurenschema door de kunstenaar, d.w.z. het optisch benadrukte bruin van het span paarden en het neutrale grijs van de achtergrond, draagt bij aan het totale effect van snelheid en een roekeloze sprint.
