Shanti Beans in de Dorpstraat werd oorspronkelijk opgericht door Jeroen Mathijs, in de Hasseltse street art community bekend als graffitiartiest Jones, die intussen helaas overleden is. Indertijd was Shanti Beans één van de pionierende koffiebars in Hasselt, met een unieke combinatie van kwaliteitskoffie, street art en goede muziek.

Diezelfde originele vibe is nog steeds kenmerkend voor het huidige Shanti Beans, inmiddels verhuisd naar de Ridderstraat en sinds juli 2024 gerund door Maya Tulleneers. De street art liefhebber komt er zeker aan zijn trekken met een immens aanbod stickers van graffitiartiesten. De kans is ook groot dat je er een lokale graffitiartiest aantreft.

Elke eerste zondag van de maand kan je bij Shanti Beans terecht voor Shanti Beats, waarbij je in de koffiebar of op hun zuiders terras kan loungen met koffie, cocktails en lokale beats. Onder meer Jan Rosius, beter bekend als de Limburgse graffitiartiest Deejoochee, stond er al achter de draaitafels. Tijdens de 'Week van de Belgische muziek' waren er ook optredens van lokale bands. Barista Maya Tulleneers is trouwens zelf ook actief als dj, in duo bij Moist en solo als Maya.

Shanti Beans in the Dorpstraat was originally founded by Jeroen Mathijs, known in Hasselt's street art community as graffiti artist Jones, who sadly passed away. At the time, Shanti Beans was one of the pioneering coffee bars in Hasselt, with a unique combination of quality coffee, street art and good music.

That same original vibe still characterises today's Shanti Beans, now in the Ridderstraat and run by Maya Tulleneers since July 2024. The street art lover is sure to find something interesting there, with an immense selection of stickers by graffiti artists. Chances are also good that you can meet a local graffiti artist there.

Every first Sunday of the month, Shanti Beans hosts Shanti Beats, where you can lounge in the coffee bar or on their southern terrace with coffee, cocktails and local beats. Among others, Jan Rosius, better known as Limburg graffiti artist Deejoochee, has already been behind the turntables there. During the ‘Week of Belgian Music’, there were also live performances by local bands. Barista Maya Tulleneers is also active as a DJ herself, in duo with Moist and solo as Maya.
