Street Art Cities

In Stokhasselt, a prominent neighbourhood in Tilburg North where more than 120 nationalities live, a huge jay has been painted. The wall was commissioned by housing association WonenBreburg and created in collaboration with the residents of the apartments.
The design was developed in consultation with various local residents. They really liked the idea of a bird. Jays are quite common in this neighbourhood and they are also really notable. According to the artist, the bird fits in very well with the surroundings.
The musical stave floating above the clouds symbolises the late Austrian composer Mahler. The flats are located on Mahlerstraat. It's a black-and-white animal, but the bird's striking feathers are painted blue.

This mural is the other half of a diptych. The flat building next door was painted last year. A magpie appeared on that wall and Mahler's music flows from that first apartment building to this one.
WonenBreburg is doing this to enhance the quality of living in this neighborhood and to involve residents in their immediate surroundings. With these murals, together with the residents, they want to bring more color, pride, and connection to Tilburg-Noord.

Fun fact: If you look carefully, you can see some bat boxes that have been installed in the wall of the building. Therefore the mural has been painted with special water-permeable paint.

In Stokhasselt, een prominente wijk in Tilburg-Noord waar meer dan 120 nationaliteiten wonen, is een enorme gaai geschilderd. De muurschildering is gemaakt in opdracht van woningcorporatie WonenBreburg en tot stand gekomen in samenwerking met de bewoners van de appartementen.
Het ontwerp is ontwikkeld in overleg met verschillende buurtbewoners. Zij waren erg enthousiast over het idee van een vogel. Gaaiën komen vrij veel voor in deze wijk. Volgens de kunstenaar past de vogel heel goed bij de omgeving.
De notenbalk die boven de wolken zweeft, symboliseert de overleden Oostenrijkse componist Mahler. De appartementen liggen aan de Mahlerstraat. Het is een zwart-wit dier, maar de opvallende veren van de vogel zijn blauw geschilderd.

Deze muurschildering vormt de andere helft van een tweeluik. Het flatgebouw ernaast is vorig jaar beschilderd. Op die muur is een ekster afgebeeld en de muziek van Mahler stroomt van dat eerste flatgebouw naar dit gebouw.
WonenBreburg doet dit om de leefkwaliteit in deze wijk te verbeteren en bewoners te betrekken bij hun directe omgeving. Met deze muurschilderingen willen ze, samen met de bewoners, meer kleur, trots en verbondenheid brengen in Tilburg-Noord.

Leuk weetje: als je goed kijkt, zie je een aantal vleermuiskasten die in de muur van het gebouw zijn aangebracht. Dat is ook de reden dat de muurschildering is aangebracht met speciale waterdoorlatende verf.
