Description

The installation "Global Gate" is recognized as the world's largest mobile artwork. It represents an oversized interpretation of the Brandenburg Gate. it was on display as a temporary installation from November 2024 until the end of March 2025 directly in front of the former Coal Washery. Following its scheduled run, it was dismantled to move to its next international exhibition location (Monaco).

The gate was modularly constructed out of 37 freight containers wrapped in approximately 2,000 square meters of printed art canvas. The installation featured two completely different large-scale designs, presented in conjunction with the AI Biennale at Zollverein:

  • The AI Side which showcased a modern, partly provocative interpretation of Michelangelo's famous painting “The Creation of Adam”. This piece was made up of a mosaic of around 12,000 monkey heads generated by Artificial Intelligence.

  • The Democracy Side which was completely dedicated to the themes of democracy, freedom, and human rights.

  • The Brandenburg Gate served as a historical symbol for overcoming borders and division.

Andrea Ranke (streetartwalks)
In 2013 I started with a new hobby. In the beginning it was difficult to get reliable information how to find streetart in public space. In 2016, I had the idea of sharing my information with other street art enthusiasts and started my blog “Streetartwalks”. When I found out about this new street art community at the beginning of 2018, I was immediately on board.
