De eerste mural in Schelle is een feit! Vrolijke en kleurrijke papegaaien en vlinders begroeten op een zijgevel de passanten. Het opvallende kunstwerk van zo’n zestig vierkante meter draagt de handtekening van graffitikunstenaar Cédric ‘Cecko’ Deckers (22).

De mural prijkt op de woning van de familie Van Pelt-Joosens. Toen Nathalie Joosens via sociale media een bericht de wereld instuurde om haar lelijke zijgevel te verfraaien, kwam ze al gauw bij Cédric uit. De jonge graffitikunstenaar is afkomstig van Aartselaar, maar onder meer via zijn mama die dierenarts is in Schelle, ook verweven met Schelle. Zijn atelier heeft hij bovendien in de vroegere Electrabel-centrale vlakbij.

“Een paar jaar geleden hadden we onze zijgevel laten behandelen tegen vocht. Heel efficiënt, maar o zo lelijk”, lacht Nathalie. “Daarom waren we al lange tijd aan het denken hoe we dit een esthetische oplossing konden geven. Na een post op sociale media kwamen er verschillende reacties om ons licht eens op te steken bij Cédric.” 

 

“Zijn werk sprak ons wel aan. De vraag was alleen, wat gaan we erop zetten? Cédrics specialisatie zijn vooral dieren. We dachten daarom in eerste instantie aan één dier, maar we geraakten er binnen ons gezin niet uit hetwelk”, lacht Nathalie.

“We zagen toen de wegwijzer die Cédric een aantal jaren geleden had gemaakt voor Putteke Winter in De Ster. Dat vonden we nog wel een cool idee, met verwijzingen die ons kenmerken en die we leuk vinden zoals ‘home’, ‘happiness’, ‘apero’, ‘beach’ en die voor de persoonlijke touch zorgen.”

Uiteindelijk is het een combinatie van de twee geworden, met blauw-gele ara’s en vlinders. Met de gele, oranje en rode tinten lijkt het, naargelang het spel van de zon, dat je ergens aan de costa naar de warme gloed van de ondergaande zon zit te staren, zo intens is de schildering. Je krijgt er een instant zomergevoel van.

The very first mural in Schelle! Cheerful and colorful parrots and butterflies greet passers-by on a side wall. The striking artwork of about 60m² is from the hands of graffiti artist Cédric 'Cecko' Deckers (22).

The mural beautiefies the home of the Van Pelt-Joosens family. When Nathalie Joosens sent a message to the world via social media to beautify her ugly side facade, she soon ended up with Cédric. The young graffiti artist comes from Aartselaar, but also intertwined with Schelle through his mother, who is a veterinarian in Schelle. He also has his studio in the former Electrabel power station nearby.
“A few years ago we had our side facade treated against moisture. Very efficient, but oh so ugly”, laughs Nathalie. “That's why we've been thinking for a long time about how to give this an aesthetic solution. After a post on social media, there were several reactions to put our light on Cédric.”
 
“His work appealed to us. The only question was, what are we going to put on it? Cédric's specialization is mainly animals. That's why we initially thought of one animal, but we couldn't figure out which one within our family," laughs Nathalie.
“We then saw the signpost that Cédric had made a few years ago for Putteke Winter in De Ster. We thought that was a cool idea, with references that characterize us and that we like such as 'home', 'happiness', 'apero', 'beach' and that provide the personal touch.”
In the end it became a combination of the two, with blue-yellow macaws and butterflies. With the yellow, orange and red tones, depending on the play of the sun, it seems that you are somewhere on the costa staring at the warm glow of the setting sun, the painting is so intense. It gives you an instant summer feeling.
