Windrush 75 Mural

Description

To mark the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the ship HMT Empire Windrush, the local graffiti artist, better known as ICreateNotDestroy, created a mural on both sides of the small square in front of Brixton Village (Granville Arcade, Coldharbour Lane), entitled ‘Windrush 75 Mural’.

The artwork was unveiled on 22 June 2023 and depicts a total of 21 influential figures who grew up in or were connected to the Windrush community. The work was commissioned by Brixton Village to celebrate the courage, resilience and immense cultural contribution of the Windrush generation and their descendants. These pioneers have forever changed and enriched post-war British culture – and, in particular, the identity of the Brixton neighbourhood.
