The Tuskegee Airmen: They Met the Challenge

Completed: 2009

This mural is the 3000th mural by the mural arts program! And they celebrated in a beautiful way. This mural depicts the Tuskegee airmen who were the first African American airmen formed in 1941 to help fight in WW2 - many from Philadelphia. In the mural, 8 locals are shown from their younger years and images of their childhood. The larger image is the head and googles of a pilot in combat. Inside the googles on the left is the image of Alfred Anderson, the airmen's pilot trainer. On the right is a depiction of him as a child holding a model airplane representing the desire to become a pilot.
