This intricate wall mosaic, created by Hanna Büddefeld and Stephanie Raß, transforms an urban surface into a vivid underwater scene. Developed as their final project at the Mosaikbauschule Dortmund, the piece showcases both technical precision and artistic sensitivity.
The composition depicts a group of jellyfish drifting through layered currents, rendered in carefully arranged tiles that mimic the fluidity of water. From concept to installation, the artists executed every step themselves: designing, composing, refining, mounting, grouting, and installing the work on a central building in Berlin. The result is a highly crafted piece of public art that merges traditional mosaic techniques with a contemporary visual language.
The mosaic is framed by a surrounding mural of stylized green birds, created by The Birds Crew. Their playful, graphic figures interact with the central artwork, forming a striking contrast between painterly street art and detailed mosaic craftsmanship, while visually anchoring the piece within its urban context.
