On the occasion of Caspar David Friedrich's 250th birthday, the Australian facade artist Fintan Magee created an almost 200 m² new interpretation of the famous painting "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" (around 1817) in Hamburg's Portuguese Quarter, the original of which is part of the Hamburger Kunsthalle collection.
The project was implemented by WALLS OF VISION together with Walls Can Dance, Northern Germany's largest open space gallery for urban art, in close cooperation with the Hamburger Kunsthalle and the main church of St. Michaelis.
Background: WALLS OF VISION makes historical art assets accessible to the general public free of charge by transferring historical paintings by urban artists into the present or future and reinterpreting them on facades in public spaces.
»It is a special honor for us to be able to contribute to the 250th birthday of Caspar David Friedrich among such renowned institutions. WALLS OF VISION started in Cologne in 2019 with an interpretation of the Wanderer. The fact that we can now dedicate another new interpretation to the Wanderer with the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the main church of St. Michaelis and Walls Can Dance fills us with joy and pride," says Marco Alfter, managing director of Dr. Hans Riegel Foundation.
The mural, the elaborate mural, at Ditmar-Koel-Straße 19 succeeds in “observing art in space and beyond space. From the viewing platform on the Michel at a height of 106 m you have a unique view of the work of art from a distance," says Alexander Röder, main pastor of St. Michaelis.
Caspar David Friedrich's birthday is also the occasion for the most extensive panorama of his art in many years: from December 15, 2023 to April 1, 2024, the Hamburger Kunsthalle is presenting around 70 of his paintings, including numerous iconic key works and around 100 drawings.
The express thanks of all those involved in the project go to the ship carpenters' cooperative, which, as the building owner, provided the facade for the work of art.
