Samenwerking tussen KIWI Wall Art, TUZQ en Cecko voor Total Loods 2026 aan de citadel in Diest.

De mural verbeeldt het Griekse mythologische verhaal van Bellerophon, Pegasus en de Chimera.

Bellerophon kreeg van de koning de schijnbaar onmogelijke opdracht om de Chimera te doden. De Chimera was een angstaanjagend monster met het lichaam van een leeuw, een geitenkop op haar rug en een slangenstaart.
Om dit monster te verslaan had Bellerophon hulp nodig. Daarvoor temde hij het gevleugelde paard Pegasus.
Vanaf Pegasus’ rug vloog hij boven de Chimera, buiten bereik van haar vuur. Vervolgens gebruikte hij een slimme truc: hij bevestigde een stuk lood aan zijn speer. Toen hij de Chimera trof, smolt het lood door de hitte van haar vuur en verstikte het monster van binnenuit.
Na zijn overwinning werd Bellerophon echter arrogant. Hij probeerde naar de Mount Olympus, de berg van de goden, te vliegen. De oppergod Zeus strafte hem daarvoor: Pegasus wierp hem af, en Bellerophon eindigde zijn leven eenzaam en vernederd. Pegasus werd vereeuwigd in de sterrenhemel.

Het mythologische verhaal laat ons zien dat hoogmoed tot de ondergang leidt. De drie artiesten achter deze monumentale mural beschouwen hun werk als een metafoor voor de mens die bijna permanent een oorlog voert tegen de natuur, terwijl hij niet van de natuurkrachten kan winnen.

The mural depicts the Greek mythological tale of Bellerophon, Pegasus and the Chimera.

Bellerophon was given the seemingly impossible task by the king to slay the Chimera. The Chimera was a terrifying monster with the body of a lion, a goat’s head on its back and a serpent’s tail.
To defeat this monster, Bellerophon needed help. To this end, he tamed the winged horse Pegasus.
From Pegasus’s back, he flew above the Chimera, out of reach of her fire. He then used a clever trick: he attached a piece of lead to his spear. When he struck the Chimera, the lead melted in the heat of her fire and suffocated the monster from within.
After his victory Bellerophon became arrogant. He even attempted to fly to Mount Olympus, the mountain of the gods. The supreme god Zeus punished him for this: Pegasus threw him off, and Bellerophon ended his life lonely and humiliated. Pegasus was immortalised in the starry sky.

The mythological tale shows us that pride leads to ruin. The three artists behind this monumental mural regard their work as a metaphor for humanity, which is almost constantly at war with nature, whilst being unable to prevail against the forces of nature.
